Holocaust Remembrance Program, Sunday April 23rd

La Crosse Public Education Foundation (LPEF) and David Stoeffler to Receive this Year’s Holocaust Educator Recognition.

Please join us at Congregation Sons of Abraham’s annual Holocaust Remembrance service on Sunday, April 23, 2017 at 11 a.m.  The La Crosse Public Education Foundation (LPEF) and its executive director, David Stoeffler will be honored for Excellence in  Holocaust Education with the 12th “Wegner Leaf” on CSOA’s Tree of Life.

About the LPEF and its Work:

LPEF’s mission is to address issues related to racism and prejudice by supporting teacher curriculum development and teacher development.

LPEF’s support for Holocaust education through the Freedland Shoah Endowment (FSE), for example, is an important part of its work.  The FSE provides grant money to social studies teachers for important books and resources not included in a school’s budget.

About David Stoeffler, Executive Director of the LPEF:

David Stoeffler is a southwest Wisconsin native and a graduate of Viterbo University.  David joined the LPEF as its executive director in June 2014, after a nearly 35-year career in the newspaper business.  Among his jobs, David was a reporter at the La Crosse Tribune from 1979-1981 and returned as the Tribune editor in 1995-97.  In every community where he served, David was active in community affairs and fundraising related to children’s issues and education preparedness.

What is a Wegner Leaf?

The Gregory P. Wegner recognition for Excellence in Holocaust education was established in 2005 at Congregation Sons of Abraham in the name of Dr. Greg Wegner, University of Wisconsin – La Crosse, beloved “teacher of teachers,” with the goal of recognizing the efforts of inspirational, full-time teachers in our area.  Over the years, recognizing that teachers come from all walks of life, we broadened the definition of teachers to include a Belgian witness-resister, a personal historian, and an entire theatre company.

We hope you will be able to join us at CSOA for this very special program honoring David  Stoeffler and the LPEF.
