Join Genie Milgrom, author of My 15 Grandmothers, as she recounts her personal journey in time, researching and ultimately finding 15 grandmothers in an unbroken maternal lineage going back to the early 1500’s in a small village named Fermoselle in the province of Zamora in Spain. Having been raised Catholic, she was able to successfully prove that her family had been Converso Sephardic Jews from before The Spanish Inquisition.

On Sunday, April 15th at 11 a.m. in the synagogue, in observance of the Holocaust Week of Remembrance (April 15-21), David Nelson will be honored with a leaf on our Tree of Life.  David is being recognized for his dedication to Holocaust education.

David P. Nelson is an English teacher at Westby Area High School in Westby, Wisconsin. He has integrated a Holocaust literature unit in his AP Language and Composition course for the past twelve years. His initial interest in Holocaust education was heightened while he was enrolled in a Holocaust education course instructed by Dr. Gregory Paul Wegner at the University of Wisconsin- LaCrosse. This fervor has been expanded to new heights through the encouragement and support he has received from Darryle Clott, a Holocaust educator at Viterbo University. David has attended several Holocaust Educators’ Workshops, directed by Darryle Clott, at Viterbo Universtiy in LaCrosse, WI. He received the WKBT-TV Top-Notch Teacher award for the month of May in 2011.

David earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in English and Secondary Education from the University of Wisconsin- LaCrosse in December of 1994. In his thirteen years of teaching at Westby Area High School, he has also coached numerous sports, served on various committees, and supervised numerous school activities, events, and competitions while continuing to search for fresh and innovative methods in which to instruct all of his students.

David and his wife Dawn, an elementary teacher in the Westby Area School District, have been married for 17 years. They reside, with their 9 year-old son Noah, in Westby, WI.
