Hanukkah Candle Ceremony

Who: The head of the family may light one menorah on behalf of the entire family. Each family member may also have his or her own.
When: Immediately after sunset. Candles should burn for at least 1/2 hour. On Friday, light before Shabbat candles; on Saturday, light after havdalah.
Where: In a place of honor which will publicize the miracle represented by the menorah. A window is ideal.
How: With the Menorah facing you, insert candles from right to left. Kindle the newest candle first and light from left to right. Oil lamps follow the same procedure. Olive oil is preferred.
What: On the first night, recite all 3 blessings. On other nights, we recite the first two only.

For the Blessing of Light

1. Baruch atah adoshem elokaynu melech ha-olam asher kidshanu b’mitzvotav vetse-vah-nu l’had-leek nair shel Hanukkah.
Praised are you L-rd our G-d, King of the Universe who has sanctified us with mitzvot and has made it a mitzvah to light the Hanukkah candles.

2. Baruch atah adoshem elokaynu melech ha-olam sheh-asa nee-seem la-vo-tay-nu, ba-ya-meem ha-haym bazman hazeh.
…who performed miracles for our ancestors in those days in this season.

3. Baruch atah adoshem elokaynu melech ha-olam sheh-heh-cheh-yanu, v’key’eh-mah-nu, v’hee-gee-ah-nu, lazman hazeh.
…who has kept us in life, granted us health and allowed us to reach this season.

Following the Hanukkah candle blessings, recite the following:

We kindle these lights to recall the great and wonderful deeds done by You, L-rd our G-d, through the Maccabees. May their light remind us to look to You, source of our help. We remember those who came before us who made every sacrifice to keep the light of Your truth burning brightly. May we and our children be inspired by their example so that Israel may continue to be a light to the world in the ways of righteousness and truth. Amen.

Rock of Ages (Maoz Tzur)

ma-OZ tzur ye-shu-a-TI, le-CHA na-EH, le-sha-BEY-ach.
ti-KON beyt te-fee-la-TI, ve-SHAHM to-DA ne-za-BEY-ach.
le-EYT ta-CHIN mat-BEY-ach, mi-TSAR hahm-na-BEY-ach,

az eg-MOR, be-SHIR miz-MOR, cha-nu-KAT ha-miz-BEY-ach.
Rock of ages, let our song, praise Your saving power;
You amid the raging foes, were our sheltering tower.
Furious they assailed us, but Your arm availed us,
And Your word broke their sword, when our own strength failed us.
And Your word broke their sword, when our own strength failed us.
